Santiago Parra & Luis Olaso at ZSONAMACO, Mexico City

9 – 13 February 2022

For ZSONAMACO 2022, JD Malat Gallery presents a group exhibition of new works by two artists; Spanish artist Luis Olaso and Colombian artist Santiago Parra, from 9 to 13 February 2022. Building on the gallery’s previous editions of ZSONAMACO, this booth explores themes of abstraction, continuing the gallery’s commitment to introducing bold and exciting artists to ZSONAMACO’s audience.

Luis Olaso (b. 1986) was initially self-taught, later studying Fine Arts at the University of the Basque Country. Olaso typically works from improvisation and divides his artistic practice into two parts; action and analysis. Often deriving inspiration from his surroundings, Olaso scratches and applies spots and drips of acrylic onto canvas which are impulsively constructed, and later altered. Through incorporating plant elements, human figures and everyday objects in his paintings, Olaso explores the contrast and balance between order and chaos, as well as the visual tension between colours, geometry and organic shapes.

The notion of spontaneity in Olaso’s paintings is paralleled in the work of Santiago Parra (b. 1986). Parra is internationally recognised for his large, abstract, and highly expressive black paintings. He achieves a harmonious conversation between spontaneity and pondering in his practice, capturing the suspended flatness of calligraphy-like imagery. Approaching the canvas without a plan, Parra uses the black paint as a means for self-exploration. Trusting his instincts to lead his hand, the artist begins his work with a single brushstroke and stops painting when he feels that his consciousness is regaining control.

This exhibition outlines JD Malat Gallery’s interest in promoting and situating established and emerging artists within the framework of contemporary art. The new body of work by Olaso and Parra is part of the wider international art historical context of abstract expressionism. From colour palettes to artistic production, the human subconscious and its everlasting controversial nature is exposed on the canvas.

JD Malat Gallery specialises in contemporary art and champions a broad spectrum of emerging and established artists. The year-round programme consists of an array of exciting artists, exhibitions and contemporary art fairs. By exhibiting at ZSONAMACO JD Malat Gallery aims to underline its role as a representative of diversity and innovation as well as strengthen the international dialogue between artists and viewers across the world.
