Biography
Amélie Peace is a French-born queer artist currently working in London. She finished her Bachelor Degree in Fine Art at the City and Guilds of London Arts School in 2020, and since then has taken part in many groups shows, including some with ‘Arusha Gallery,’ ‘The Columbia’ and ‘Prior Space X Phillips.’
Peace’s practice delves into exploring the experience of touch and the human need for physical connection. The psycho-physical dialogues that the artist depicts in her paintings discuss emotional, sexual and gendered experiences. In her work, Peace explores different questions on physicality: what it means to have a body, to share that body, and how this physical connection alters one’s perception of their own physical presence and self.
The artist captures moments that stand on the line between softness and cruelty. The complicated net of emotions depicted on the canvas is enriched with subtle clues left for the viewer to decipher the story behind each piece. Peace has always been fascinated by hands, a form which is frequently accentuated on the painterly surface and used as a stepping stone for building a storyline.
The intensity of colour in Peace’s work is used as a tool to portray the array of themes and emotions she explores in her practice. The artist accentuates the physicality of expressing emotions, the power found in the unspoken language of the gestural. Each painting invites the viewer to join the eternal conversations on self-discovery and self-expression.
