Santiago Parra: INSTINCT (Online Exhibition)

9 July - 9 August 2023
Overview

'There is a moment in this intense concentration where consciousness shuts down giving way to the unconscious mind, in this moment I enter a trance and begin to paint, it is only when I regain consciousness that I lift the brush, the process takes 3 or 4 seconds at most.' – Santiago Parra.

JD Malat Gallery is pleased to present "INSTINCT", showcasing the recent captivating works by Colombian artist Santiago Parra. Through his masterful brushstrokes, Parra defies the conventional notion of abstraction, allowing his unconscious to take control in creating a dynamic interplay of instinct and artistic expression.

Drawing inspiration from the surrealist movement, Parra explores the representation of illogical scenes and ideas that emerge from the depths of the subconscious mind. Employing a technique known as 'automatism,' he relinquishes conscious control over the creative process. Each bold and expressive brushstroke is applied in a single fluid movement and is never retouched. This unfiltered approach conveys the true essence of Parra's aesthetic, creating an unfiltered visual language that resonates on a primal level.

Beyond what can be captured by a camera, Parra's paintings possess a rich texture that beckons to be felt. Incorporating elements such as marble dust and sand, Parra masterfully creates intriguing surfaces that entice the viewer to explore further. This unique use of mixed media delves into the nuanced shades of darkness, transcending the boundaries of traditional abstract expressionism and calligraphy.

The dynamic brushstrokes evoke a palpable sense of movement and energy, creating an immersive experience. As the boundaries between consciousness and unconsciousness begin to blur, one finds themselves gradually immersed in tranquillity, delving into the realm of instinct where art and the human spirit converge.

"INSTINCT" invites you to embark on a journey of introspection, where the power of the brushstroke and the monochromatic beauty of Parra's creations awaken a deeper understanding of your own unconscious mind.
