This week's #artistinfocus is Hande Sekerciler. Head over to our instagram page to learn more about her life and work! 💥 Hande Sekerciler was born in 1982 in Bursa, Turkey. She attended Marmara University, studying in the Department of Arts and Crafts Education from 1998 to 2002. Sekerciler is renowned for her figurative sculptures. Drawing inspiration from the Hellenistic and Renaissance periods as well as everyday contemporary life, Sekerciler explores the fusion between classical form and socio-cultural issues. Her interest in technology and new production techniques also help her to combine classical forms with contemporary production methods. Each figure is devoid of clothing and even hair to give little insight into a specific identity. This rejection of identifiable aspects serve to free her sculptural forms from gendered and societal labels, urging the viewer to contemplate the body's existence as independent from societal structures. The series 'Ectasy', for example, shows us figures at "peace with their sexuality and orientation who embrace their existence".
