Billy Al Bengston, JW Series 1 of 6, 1967
JD Malat Gallery is thrilled to announce the historic group show "Ferus: A Visual Conversation" which will showcase never before seen artworks by Billy Al Bengston (b.1934) , John Altoon (1925 – 1969), Ed Moses (1926 – 2018), Craig Kauffman (1932 – 2010) and Giorgio Morandi (1890 – 1964). Opening the new season with an exhibition dedicated to the artistic relationships that flourished within the Ferus Gallery, JD Malat Gallery seeks to examine the centrality of visual exchange amongst these established figures during the 1950s and 1960s.

Billy Al Bengston
Los Angeles Watercolor, 1958
Billy Al Bengston is an American contemporary artist and sculptor. Born in 1934, Bengston was one of the key figures in the Ferus Gallery circle in Los Angeles. His artistic practice is most associated with West Coast Pop and is best known for spray painting dented sheets of square aluminium with lacquer. Amongst the recurring motifs in his practice are the signature sergeant's stripes, which he adopted after seeing the work of Jasper Jones at the 1958 Venice Biennale.

Ed Moses

Born in 1926, Long Beach, US and known as a central figure of Post-War West Coast art, Ed Moses created an eclectic body of work that has engaged with the varying possibilities of painterly abstraction. From monochromes and diagonal grids to gestural works and vibrant expanses of saturated pigment, Moses has unveiled a continual process of discovery within painterly abstraction. Moses’ work explores his fascination with the mutability of concepts, transitional spaces and processes.

John Altoon
Untitled (ABS-1), 1963
Known as a prominent figure in the LA art scene in the 1950s and 1960s, John Altoon produced drawings, paintings, and prints of overt satires, personal nightmares and improbable sexual situations. Born in 1925, in Los Angeles, CA, he was influenced by his encounter with Surrealism in his travels through Europe, when he frequently depicted his dreams and fantasies. His renderings are characterised by their misty and ghostly quality, which he achieved by using an airbrush to apply colour.

Craig Kauffman
Shoe, 1962-63
Craig Kauffman is an American West Coast painter and sculptor, working mainly with acrylic and plastic. Born in 1932 in Los Angeles, Kauffman was one of the most significant figures to emerge from the fertile art scene in the 1950s and 1960s in Los Angeles. For almost sixty years, he experimented with form, colour, material and space and created a vast body of work, including painterly and sculptural objects.
Giorgio Morandi

Giorgio Morandi was an Italian painter and printmaker, specialising in still life. His artworks are best known for their tonal subtlety in depicting simple subjects that could be found in any kitchen - such as jars, ceramic bowls and vases, bottles, pitchers, jugs and boxes. His extensive body of work is noted for its muted, contemplative compositions, familiar objects which are purposely stripped of any identifying marks such as labels, creating a sense of anonymity and universality.
