Biography
Gary Lang (b.1950, Los Angeles) has established himself as a multifaceted artist whose practice encompasses painting, sculpture, muralism and education. His artistic oeuvre has evolved through several distinctive series, including his renowned Concentric Circles and Squares, Zipper Paintings, Stars, and Word Paintings, alongside sculptural works that incorporate ritualistically assembled objects.
At the centre of Lang's practice lies his mesmerising concentric line paintings which emerge through an organic process devoid of mechanical aids or preliminary sketches. His technique, developed over decades, marries spontaneity with intentionality, creating works that radiate with vibrant chromatic sequences. For Lang, the creative process serves as a meditative practice, drawing profound inspiration from present-moment awareness.
His contributions to art education include lectureships at prestigious institutions such as the University of California in Los Angeles, Claremont Colleges of California, and Yale University. Lang's public art encompasses significant murals in La Jolla, California, and outdoor sculptures in New Haven, Connecticut.
Lang's work has garnered international recognition through more than seventy solo exhibitions across the globe, including shows in Austria, France, Japan, The Netherlands, and Spain. His pieces are housed in numerous distinguished collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Gemeentemuseum den Haag. His artistic excellence has been acknowledged with the 2015 Arts & Letters Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the 2017 Francis J. Greenburger Award.
